Philosophy of life

Posted by NoeL in , , ,

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village.

A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

"Not very long." they answered in unison.

"Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?"

The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families.

"But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

"We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children, and take siestas with our wives. In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. We have a full life."

The tourist interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you!
You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat."

"And after that?"

"With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant.

You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City!

From there you can direct your huge new enterprise."

"How long would that take?"

"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years." replied the tourist.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting," answered the tourist, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the fishermen.

"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast,
sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends."

"With all due respect sir, but that's exactly what we are doing now. So what's the point wasting twenty-five years?" asked the Mexicans.

And the moral of this story is:
Know where you're going in life.... you may already be there.

MBA Tips - Group Discussion

Posted by NoeL in , , , , ,

Making a good impression while speaking in meetings or interviews is the basic skill every professional should have.

What skills are judged in group discussion?

  • How good you are at communication with others.
  • How you behave and interact with group.
  • How open minded are you.
  • Your listening skill.
  • How you put forward your views.
  • Your leadership and decision making skills.
  • Your analysis skill and subject knowledge.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skill.
  • Your attitude and confidence.
Do’s and Don’ts of Group discussion:
  1. Keep eye contact while speaking: Do not look at the evaluators only. Keep eye contact with every team member while speaking.
  2. Initiate the GD: Initiating the GD is a big plus. But keep in mind - Initiate the group discussion only when you understood the GD topic clearly and have some topic knowledge. Speaking without proper subject knowledge is bad impression.
  3. Allow others to speak: Do not interrupt anyone in-between while speaking. Even if you don’t agree with his/her thoughts do not snatch their chance to speak. Instead make some notes and clear the points when it’s your turn.
  4. Speak clearly: Speak politely and clearly. Use simple and understandable words while speaking. Don’t be too aggressive if you are disagreeing with someone. Express your feelings calmly and politely.
  5. Make sure to bring the discussion on track: If by any means group is distracting from the topic or goal then simply take initiative to bring the discussion on the track. Make all group members aware that you all need to come to some conclusion at the end of the discussion. So stick to the topic.
  6. Positive attitude: Be confident. Do not try to dominate anyone. Keep positive body language. Show interest in discussion.
  7. Speak sensibly: Do not speak just to increase your speaking time. Don’t worry even if you speak less. Your thoughts should be sensible and relevant instead of irrelevant speech.
  8. Listen carefully to others: Speak less and listen more! Pay attention while others are speaking. This will make coherent discussion and you will get involved in the group positively. You will surely make people agree with you.
  9. No need to go into much details: Some basic subject analysis is sufficient. No need to mention exact figures while giving any reference. You have limited time so be precise and convey your thoughts in short and simple language.
  10. Formal dressing: Do not take it casually. No fancy and funny dressing. You should be comfortable while speaking in group. Positive gesture and body language will make your work easy.

Hyderabad, January 27, 2009: The Indian School of Business (ISB) has been ranked  No: 15 in the global B-school rankings released by the Financial Times, London. Previously, in the year 2008, the ISB was ranked 20 by Financial Times, making it the first Indian business school to be counted among the world’s top 20. This is the second year in a row, when ISB has achieved a high rank among leading international business schools.

“I am very proud of the ISB’s achievement.  The high level of commitment of the faculty, students, alumni, and the staff at the ISB as well as the unstinting guidance of its associate schools and the Board, have made it possible for this new institution to overcome many challenges in its formative years,” said Rajat Gupta, Chairman, ISB. “ISB’s vision is to make high quality education accessible to a large number of aspirants and I am delighted that the school is growing steadily to fulfill that vision.”

The ISB was established in 2001 by a group of leading industrialists and academicians from India and abroad. From 126 students in 2001, ISB has steadily increased the number of students year after year. The Class of 2009 will have 440 students graduating in April 2009. ISB will be increasing the number of students to 560 in the Class of 2010. Recently, the ISB also announced the setting up of a second campus at Mohali which is likely to commence classes in 2012.

Congratulating the ISB community, Ajit Rangnekar, Dean, ISB, said, “This is a testimony of the dedication and commitment of our faculty, students, alumni, and staff. ISB’s success is a clear demonstration of how the will, energy, and ambition of a diverse group of people can achieve an overarching vision in a remarkably short time. We owe immense gratitude to our Board, our associate schools, our Faculty Heads from these schools, and the former Deans of ISB, who have guided us through our eventful journey.”

The ISB community gathered at the Atrium to celebrate the occasion. Spouses, students, staff, children, faculty, and alumni expressed their elation jubilantly. Echoing the sentiments of the entire student community, Rohit Kapoor, the President of the Graduate Student Board at the ISB said, “It is fantastic to witness history unfolding at my alma mater! I am amazed at the quality of faculty that teach us and at how much I have learnt and grown in the last few months. We are all extremely proud to be ISBians, ISB Rocks!”

Within a short span of eight years, the ISB has made a mark for itself as a premier, B-School in India. Since its inception, the ISB has been a leader in the field of management education by bringing in international best practices and people. The ISB introduced the one year programme, unique portfolio model of faculty, students with prior work experience and diverse backgrounds, the GMAT score as a selection criterion, lateral placements, international quality research and several other initiatives. Being ranked ‘Fifteen’ among global B-schools is a validation of the ISB’s effort to establish an international B-School located in India.

TISS 2009 - 11 Results

Posted by NoeL in , , , , , , , ,

Today, the results of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) are out for the admissions to its Post Graduate Programmes 2009 – 11. The results for the same can be obtained from the link below. TISS Results

I was looking up the results for someone who was very close to my heart. But what to say, the website just don’t load. That is when I decide to do some ‘wandering’ in this World Wide Web. Let me share with you all couple of things that I found interesting.

President Obama’s Inaugural Address
I had seen the entire ceremony live on CNN.com. I did expect much more from him in his inaugural address. The ‘hope’ and ‘change’ were limited to less than what was expected. Stock Markets world over, which were searching for a direction in this turbulent times, tumbled. Anyways, you can find the full text of his speech here.

Also the video can be watched here.

President Obama’s Speech at the Lincoln Memorial 1-18-09 Pre-Inauguration
Full text of his speech in it's crude form can be found here.
Also, find the video here.

Google Bomb!

How does a Google Bomb happen?
A Google Bomb happens when a group of people get together, coordinating themselves to link to a certain page using certain agreed-upon phrase, often for humorous or political purposes.

Read more about the latest Google Bomb “cheerful achievement” here.

Now, coming back to TISS Results, even after an hour and more than 100 refreshes, TISS results elude me. I have just sent in an email to TISS Admissions office as per their instructions on their website. I quote.

Candidates who are unable to see the Results after repeated attempts may send an email to pgadmissions@tiss.edu with details such as Registration Number, Centre, Course(s) Applied, Category and Date of Birth to know their results.

Hope to see the results soon.

BusinessWeek 2008 Rankings Are Out!

Posted by NoeL in , , , , , ,

BusinessWeek released its much awaited biannual, full-time MBA rankings. The rankings showed slight movement: Columbia went from #10 in 06 to #7 in 08. Wharton went from #2 to #4. Kelley climbed from #18 to #15.
Frankly, don't pay too much attention to the absolute ranking or even slight movement. Take advantage of BW's rich, informative database and fantastic resources for applicants. Then choose what's important to you and do your own ranking.
Top 30 U.S. Programs
  1. University of Chicago

BW bases its rankings on employer and student surveys as well as school research output or "intellectual captial." This year for the first time, in a nod to the economic crisis, it is also including a ranking based on ROI  and years to recoup the MBA investment. Not surprisingly, European schools, which tend to be one-year programs, are at the top of the chart. More surprising: HBS ranks 50 out of 50 in this chart. I guess assumptions matter.

GMAC Vs ScoreTop.com Scandal

Posted by NoeL in , , , , ,

Guys,

If you are a GMAT aspirant, the following news will be important for you.

www.scoretop.com, a website that was providing online study materials for GMAT was sued by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the owners of GMAT. Scoretop, through their VIP membership, was supposedly distributing copyrighted material of GMAC.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia has issued a default judgment awarding the damages in the amount of $2.3 million, attorneys’ fees, court costs, and other relief in a copyright infringement case brought by GMAC against Lei Shi and other operators of the U.S.-based web site known as Scoretop.com.

GMAC goes on to say "... if individuals have violated its testing policies through their participation in Scoretop. Violators may have their GMAT scores canceled, and business schools will be notified of those cancellations..."

So, if anyone among you have/had subscribed to the VIP Membership at www.scoretop.com, be careful. Also, praying to all the known Gods will be a good idea.

Village labourer cracks IIT entrance

Posted by NoeL in , ,

Here is another inspirational story from the millions out there. This is the second of its kind in my blog. The first one can be found here.

With hard effort and single-minded devotion, you can make possible what seems impossible.

That is what an 18-year-old has shown in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh. With not enough to eat, and no money even to burn the midnight oil, in a village with hardly nine hours daily power supply, the boy managed to secure 453rd rank in the IIT entrance exam. However, he has won only half the battle yet.

At Garikapadu village in Khammam district, the IIT entrance rank holder, Narasimha Rao, is a labour under the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme.

With the daily wage of Rs 80, Narasimha wants to repay dues for borrowing books from a reference library. Even at work, his thoughts revolve around science.

''When I am working in the field also, I think of questions in physics. I just can't understand how these mobiles work? How the waves travel?'' says Narasimha.

Narsimha's mother Lakshmi can't tell what exam her son has passed but the labourer parents say their son has made them proud.

''My boy said he would buy me a gas stove to cook after he gets a job. I know he is grown up now. My eyes burn when we burn wood,'' says Lakshmi.

Narsimha managed to get coaching in an IIT institute in nearby Vijaywada with the financial support by some elders in this village. Now the 18-year-old has to attend counselling at IIT Madras on June 18, for which he does not even have travel expenses.

''After I am settled in life, I promise to pay back the money. I will be so thankful,'' says Narasimha.

What value does an institute add?

Posted by NoeL in ,

There were many occasions when my juniors have approached me asking for my opinion and suggestion on taking up a particular institute over the other. At times, it gets still complicated. They even ask me to help him/her choose between the branch of study and the institute.

For a start… Let me tell something about myself. I had gone through this phase around 6 years back... In 2002, when I was out of my 12th Std, I had lot of options with me... being one of the top CET rankers from Kerala, I was really confused… (I often feel that a man gets totally confused when the life starts giving him many options!) I wanted to take up Electronics then… Not because I knew what was being taught in that or what kind of career path existed for an Electronics Engineer. It was simply because it was the hottest branch in 2002. And I believe it still is. Together with this interest in Electronics (for whatever reason I have told), I wanted to do my Engineering from one of the NITs and that too only from one of the South Indian NITs viz. Calicut, Trichy, Surathkal and Warangal…

Then the inevitable happened... Something many of my juniors (are/will be) facing… I won’t be getting Electronics in the 4 NITs I wanted… Finally, I decided to take up Mechanical Engineering at NIT Trichy… A decision which is still cloudy to me…

Now coming back to the topic… the MILLION DOLLAR question…
  • Did I learn something special at NIT Trichy which I wouldn’t have got in any of the colleges in Kerala?
  • Was it worth taking up Mechanical Engineering at NIT Trichy leaving the Electronics seat which was waiting for me at College of Engineering, Trivandrum? (CET Trivandrum is supposed to be the best college in Kerala and an Electronics seat there was a hen that lays golden egg. )
  • What value addition did NIT Trichy do in me?

I am not going to list down all that I gained from being at NIT Trichy. But then, I can, without doubt, say that NIT Trichy has transformed me into a very different person. Many learning which I have got, the attitude I am carrying with me now… are all from NIT Trichy and I don’t think I would have got those, had I took any of the colleges in Kerala.

Why am I telling you all these? I had yet again gone through this entire thought process very recently… for deciding upon my MBA admissions… I had a couple of MBA admits and I rejected them all… including IIM Lucknow, FPM admit…

Today, with the learning I have got, having gone through this thought process twice… is…

  • If one knows 100% what he/she wants to become in life (I mean, the branch of engineering or the specialization in Management), he/she should look towards taking up just that… And he/she can even afford to skip few of the top ranked colleges for his choice of study.

  • But then… If one has even a little bit of hesitation from his/her part on which branch or specialization to take, I will STRONGLY recommend them to look for the best college they can get into. It is because the kind of peer group learning which he/she will be getting at these institutions are very different from the other institutions. Here, one will be able to learn quite a lot… not just the text book stuff… and this will in turn help him/her come out as a complete personality package...
Your comments are welcome.
